VELOSIT RCS-free technology drives safer construction

As the construction industry continues to focus on reducing exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS), product selection is becoming an increasingly important consideration when planning concrete repair and infrastructure works.

RCS is a fine dust that can be generated when materials containing crystalline silica are cut, sawn, ground, drilled, polished, scabbled or crushed. The particles are typically less than 10 microns in size, which is small enough to be inhaled deep into the lungs. Prolonged exposure can lead to serious health conditions including silicosis and lung cancer.

For contractors and infrastructure professionals, this means considering not only how products are applied, but also the materials being used and the potential risks associated with them.

VELOSIT, one of Hychem Infrastructure’s specialist international partners, has developed a range of cementitious products formulated without respirable crystalline silica (RCS), alongside dust-reduction technology designed to minimise airborne dust during mixing and handling.

A valued partner for the last decade, VELOSIT’s technologies span several construction applications, including concrete repair, precision grouts, screeds and waterproofing, providing contractors with options across a range of demanding projects.

For contractors, the benefit is straightforward: selecting RCS-free products can help remove one potential source of respirable silica exposure at the material level. This can form part of a broader approach to managing exposure on site, alongside appropriate workplace controls and safe handling practices.

Hychem’s Infrastructure and Commercial Manager, Dean Barr, says safety needs to be considered alongside product performance when selecting materials for any project.

“For us, it’s about giving contractors more informed choices that cover all bases,” Dean said.

“Technologies that reduce airborne dust and remove RCS from product formulations are important steps towards better managing exposure risks on site, alongside appropriate workplace controls and safe work practices.”

“Through our partnership with VELOSIT, we’re proud to offer contractors innovative solutions that address exposure risks while meeting the demands of challenging construction applications. We’re eager to see what VELOSIT does next,” he said.

As the industry continues to strengthen its approach to RCS management, material innovation will remain an important part of the conversation around safer construction and remediation. To learn more about the products Hychem chooses for safe and sustainable infrastructure solutions, click here.
